Fixed Solar Panels & Flexible Solar Panels

There are now 2 types of solar panel you can use to generate electricity. The older solid panels that sit in or on a frame or the newer flexible panel that can be bent around a surface and stuck in place with a silicone adhesive or double sided tape. You can put a zipper on it or mount it with eyelets a ropes. The trick is not to crease it or put a hard edge bend in it.

The panels main function is to convert sun light to electricity. The reason you have them is to charge a battery and the battery normal powers an inverter so you can run electrical items in your caravan, campervan or 4 wheel drive.

What are the different types of Solar Panels?

The 3 different types of solar panel are:

  • Monocrystalline - Solid. More expensive, uses less space. Efficiency Over 20%
  • Thin film - Flexible. Withstands high temperatures and is light weight. Less durable than the other 2. Efficiency 6 to 15%

Do Solar Panels come in kits and what is in them?

You can get kits, which if you have no solar at all is a good way to start. These come with everything you need and include the solar panel or panels, charge controller/regulator and all cabling.
