Whether a standard 7 pin trailer plug or any variant, Repco have the trailer plug you need
Essential for connecting the electrical systems of a towing vehicle and your trailer, a trailer plug transmits signals for lighting, braking, and other critical trailer functions. The differences in trailer adapters and plugs generally relate to the number of pins they have and this corresponds to the number of functions they can control. At Repco we stock every variant of 7 pin trailer plug and more from Narva, OEX, Hayman Reese, Trojan and other leading brands. Tow with confidence when you have the right trailer plug adaptor for your vehicle and trailer.
Common variants of trailer plug and their uses:
In both Australia and New Zealand we tend to use either a 7 pin trailer plug or a 12 pin trailer plug when connecting our trailers to our vehicles. Available in both large and small variants as well as a flat trailer plug or round format these all transmit the required electrical signals to power a number of functions on your trailer.
The standard 7 pin trailer plug in both round and flat configurations is commonly used on a wide variety of box trailers, car trailers and caravans. This 7 pin format supports all basic lighting functions, such as brake lights and side marker lights, as well as electric brakes and reverse lights.
Depending on age, size limitations and accessibility, you may find your trailer has a 7 pin round trailer plug, whilst your vehicle may have a 7 pin flat plug. This isn't an issue as Repco sell a wide selection of trailer plug adaptors that can easily bridge the gap between different trailer plugs and sockets.
Becoming more common on large format caravans, campers, and horse trailers is the 12 pin trailer plug. A 12-pin plug is usually made up of a row of seven pins and a row of five larger pins. The seven pins are used for electrical power and braking, while the larger pins are used for higher current.
The 12 pins on these trailer plugs can run a wider variety of functions, including powering auxiliary devices like refrigerators, 4x4 accessories, and battery systems. They can also control electric trailer brakes as well as the usual reverse lights, stop lights, rear lights, clearance lights, side marker lights, and rear fog lamps.
It is recommended using an 50A Anderson plug instead of the 12-pin plug for running a charge feed to a caravan's batteries. The 12 pin trailer plug is not designed for this, and trying to do so can damage the trailer plug and socket.
We also stock 13 pin plugs, Euro sockets and Electric Brake system specific trailer plugs as well to ensure we have the right trailer plug for your requirements.
