Car Key Barrel & Locks from Rare Spares

When restoring a classic car it will be worth checking any keys you have for it and see if they match the ignition, doors and boot. Some classics have a glove box key and a fuel cap key as well. Sometimes you will find that the door key may open one side and not the other. If that is the case you are usually missing one of those keys. Keys or locks can be worn and you need to jiggle the key in the lock to get it to work.

All the above can be frustrating, especially on a newly restored car. It doesn't even have to be restored you may have picked up a nice cruiser with these issues. Help is at hand as Rare Spares make a range of these locks and barrels so you can make life easier and simplify your key collection.

The other good thing is you get a spare key which when buying second hand cars does not always happen. You may only get the one key. If you don't get all the keys you may even want to change the locks from a security point of view. How well did you know the seller? On very odd occasions newly bought classics have disappeared due to some unscrupulous people having a 'spare' key.

Ignition, Door's and Boot locks.

Changing door locks or a boot lock is fairly straight forward. Removing the interior trim on the doors to access the locks can be the hard part. A good set of trim removal tools helps with this. Locks are usually held in place with clips. Ignition locks an early classics are not too bad as they are mounted separately on the dash. It is the ones in the steering column's that lock the steering which are a lot more difficult to remove. When I say difficult, time consuming is a better word. Once done, taking the car your classic for a drive just got that much easier.

Glovebox and Fuel Caps

Glovebox locks are very straight forward to change and not everyone locks their glovebox. You are more likely to replace it if it is worn out or damaged and will not stay closed. For locking fuel caps, either replace the old with a new one or get a locksmith to sort out the old one for you.

Rare Spares Key Barrel & Locks section covers the Holden and Ford range of vehicles. If your classic's doors have 2 separate keys or the ignition barrel is getting temperamental, they will have the parts to sort it out for you. Repco has a great range of key barrel and locks as well as dashboard parts, door components and locking fuel caps from Rare Spares.
