In the early days of the Cold War back in 1953 the Rocket Chemical company set out to develop rust prevention solvents and degreaser to be used in the aerospace industry. After many trials and tribulations their water displacement product was born and the name WD40 originated directly from their 40th attempt at this water displacing (WD) formulation. Used to protect the outer skin of the Atlas Missile from rust and corrosion the product proved so popular that employees snuck cans out of the plant to use at home for a myriad of jobs. Fast forward almost 70 years later and the name WD40 is synonymous today with over 2000 documented uses, from starting wet engines to helping to remove window tint.
