How To Check Your Tyre Tread Depth

Tyre maintenance is an incredibly important part of owning a car, as problems with your tyres can easily put you and your family into dangerous situations on the road.

Tyre tread depth is a measure of how much your tyre has worn down and is the best indicator of when to replace your tyres. Tyre treads help to maintain grip on wet surfaces and once the grooves in your tyres become too shallow it becomes unsafe.

This is because the groove is not deep enough to channel the water under the tyre and the tyre can skid and slip, as your tyre’s contact with the road’s surface has been broken by the water; this is called aquaplaning and is incredibly dangerous.

Measuring Your Tyre Tread Using a Tyre Gauge

The gauge measures the groove of your tyre, with the legal depth being 1.6mm, and the usual recommendation being to change your tyres when the tread depth reaches 3mm.

Step By Step for Checking Your Tyre Tread Depth

1
Press the gauge into your tyre’s tread and hold it in place.
2
If it shows green, your tyre depth is fine to drive on and is within the recommended mm range for tyre tread depth.

3
Yellow tells you that your tyre needs to be replaced.
4
Red means that you should not drive on the tyre, as it will be dangerous, especially in wet conditions.
