Choosing the right wheel and tyre combination for your trailer

Due to the variances in axles and wheel hubs used in trailer manufacturing there are no set specifications as to what your trailer uses. This is where it becomes necessary to measure the PCD of your trailer hub or existing wheel to ensure you purchase the right size.

Understanding Stud Patterns

  • Pitch Circle Diameter (PCD) is a diameter measurement that references the number of studs equally spaced around a circle on the hub face.
  • Pitch Circle Diameter (PCD) Stud pattern refers to the combination of a PCD and stud quantity.

How to measure PCD

The quantity of studs will vary how you need to measure to determine the PCD. Next you will need to work out what size tyre.

How tyre sizes are measured

When purchasing a trailer wheel and tyre assembly it is important that you are purchasing the correct fit. The tyre size is usually moulded into the sidewall of the tyre. This code provides summary information on the tyre size and construction type, for example 155/80 R13.

Understanding tyre measurements

  • 155 - indicates the normal section width of the tyre in millimetres (155mm).
  • 80 - indicates its aspect ratio and is found by dividing a tyres sidewall height by the tyre’s width. The tyres sidewall height is measured from the base of the tread to the outer rim taken in millimetres. (80 indicates the height is 80% of its width).
  • R - indicates that it is radial construction.
  • 13 - indicates the diameter of the wheel rim in inches.
