What Does The Colour In Coolant Signify?

Confronted with the myriad of coloured coolants these days can be confusing at the best of times. No longer are the standard green coolant and red coolant options the only choice, and when it comes to providing the best protection for your cooling system what do you need to look out for when choosing the best coolant for your vehicle. As always, the best option for your vehicles' cooling system is the formulation specified by your vehicle's manufacturer as this will provide the best cooling and protection characteristics.

So what do some of the colours usually signify and what are the differences between these. In most cases, your common garden variety green coolant is formulated with Inorganic Acid Technology (IAT). This formulation contains silicates and phosphate corrosion inhibitors and is typically used in older vehicles manufactured before the mid-1990s. Coolants that are available as orange, red or blue usually feature in newer vehicles and contain Organic Acid Technology (OAT) that does not feature these silicates and phosphate corrosion inhibitors. New vehicles can now also feature coolant using Hybrid Organic Acid Technology (HOAT) as this formulation contains added silicates to protect against corrosion and aluminium wear. For easier identification, these can be found as yellow, pink, blue or purple colours to differentiate.

When Changing Your Engine Coolant

When it comes to changing your engine coolant and maintaining these protective characteristics, always consult your vehicle handbook for the correct schedule. Unless a coolant is listed as being "lifetime", all coolants will require changing at some point in your vehicles service schedule. To undertake this, you'll be needing a drain pan and a coolant funnel at a minimum to ensure you can drain and refill with a minimum of spillage. Whilst you are changing coolants it is always suggested to check any coolant hose for signs of wear or deterioration and replace as required.
