Developed for rockets, the sky is the limit for uses of WD40
In the early days of the Cold War back in 1953 the Rocket Chemical company set out to develop rust prevention solvents and degreaser to be used in the aerospace industry. After many trials and tribulations their water displacement product was born and the name WD40 originated directly from their 40th attempt at this water displacing (WD) formulation. Used to protect the outer skin of the Atlas Missile from rust and corrosion the product proved so popular that employees snuck cans out of the plant to use at home for a myriad of jobs. Fast forward almost 70 years later and the name WD40 is synonymous today with over 2000 documented uses, from starting wet engines to helping to remove window tint.
The packaging may have changed over the years but the iconic blue and yellow design on cans and bottles of WD40 lets you know that the formula inside is the same that has been helping you solve all manner of problems with a quick squirt.
When it comes to making the most of your can of WD40 here are just a sample of what it can do:
- Lubricates - WD-40's lubricating ingredients keep parts moving smoothly and reduces friction and wear, helping parts work better for longer. WD-40 does not contain silicone and is ozone friendly.
- Cleans - WD-40 gets under dirt, sap, grime and grease to clean while forming a corrosion resistant barrier. It also dissolves glue and adhesives, allowing easy removal of labels, tape and stickers from most surfaces. Just spray and allow it to soak for several minutes before wiping off.
- Protects - WD-40 contains corrosion resistant ingredients that shield metal surfaces against moisture and other corrosive elements.
- Penetrates - WD-40's fast acting ingredients penetrate into rusted, stuck, frozen and seized up parts, allowing you to quickly loosen bolts and keep parts working freely.
- Displaces Moisture - WD-40 is non-conductive and works by displacing moisture in electrical systems, eliminating moisture induced short circuits.
Whatever your situation at home, in the garage or even out on the open road there's no shortage of uses for any of the products in the WD40 range. Whether sticking with the multi purpose all rounder that is WD40 through to the more specialised offerings such as Lithium Grease or Chain Lube you know there will be product in the range to suit whatever you need to unstick, lubricate, stop squeaking, shine, remove moisture or penetrate around the home or workshop. It seems the only limit is your imagination for these versatile products.
