Whilst your flexible rubber brake hoses are the first to show signs of wear also give a thought to the solid metal brake lines attached to those brake hoses. Rust, corrosion and dirt build up can affect braking performance and can weaken and decay these solid lines if not attended to.
With brake fluid being hygroscopic this means that the brake fluid attracts water over time and when this water meets the metal brake pipes this can cause rust to develop. With a build up of rust this could be seen by having to use greater force when applying the brakes. This rust in the brake fluid can also contaminate the braking system by attacking the sensitive seals in the brake caliper and brake master cylinder.
The easiest way to stay on top of this is to change your brake fluid in line with the manufacturers recommendations and flush this completely through your brake system.
