Popular Questions Asked
What does a turbocharger intercooler do?
A turbo intercooler is a heat exchanger that cools the hot compressed air down to a lower air temperature so cool air goes into the engine's intake manifold. Any forced induction engine, whether supercharged or turbocharged, can use an intercooler for increased horsepower. Compressing air causes heat, hot air is not as dense, therefore, there is less oxygen to burn, producing less power. Cooling the compressed air gives a density increase leading to more power.
Why do I need a turbocharger intercooler?
There are two main types of intercoolers. Air-to-air intercoolers use air flowing over the intercooler to cool the intake air. Air-to-water intercoolers use water to cool the intake air. The air-to-water intercoolers are more efficient than air-to-air intercoolers. An air-to-air intercooler is more lightweight than an air-to-water unit. They both work as heat exchangers.
What are the signs your intercooler is failing?
The severity of this issue can differ from car to car and may indicate different signs. Some of the symptoms include:
- Airflow can reduce
- Notice unusual amounts of smoke from the exhaust system
- Engine power can reduce
- Turbocharger failure
