Car Flywheels - A rotating mass that smooths out vibrations
A flywheel is a large heavy metal disc that bolts onto the end of an engine crankshaft in its centre on one side and has a clutch attached to its machined flat surface facing the gearbox on the other. Around the outside it has a row of teeth so it looks like an overweight gear or cog. It is only found in vehicles fitted with a manual gearbox that have a clutch pedal.
What is the role of a Flywheel?
A flywheel has a number of roles it performs which is why it looks like it does.
What is the difference between a Single and Dual Mass Flywheel?
Basically there is no difference in the roles they perform though there are variations.
Single Mass Flywheel - A single heavy disc of metal, machined to attach a clutch and bolt to a crankshaft. It has a ring gear around the outside for the starter motor.
Dual Mass Flywheel - Two heavy discs of metal joined together, machined to attach a clutch and bolt to a crankshaft. It has a ring gear around the outside for the starter motor. Between the two metal discs is springs to help smooth out engine vibrations.
Shifting gears in a car fitted with a dual mass flywheel is a lot smoother than that of a single mass flywheel. The detriment is when they need to be replaced, they are a lot more expensive than a single mass flywheel. A lot of clutch companies offer single mass flywheel replacements for vehicles fitted with dual mass flywheels for this reason.
At Repco we have a range of single and dual mass flywheels available to suit most vehicles. Whether you are after a performance version or replacing your factory original, we can help you out.
