Accelerator Cables

An accelerator cable is the point of contact between the throttle body and the accelerator pedal. The cable is a braided metal that is usually cased with an outer surface usually made from rubber or plastic. An accelerator cable is also commonly called a throttle cable, it allows drivers to control the speed of their vehicle via the acceleration pedal.

When the time comes to look for a replacement accelerator cable, you may notice several symptoms or significant signs, including:

• Delayed engine response - when accelerating using the pedal, your engine should respond almost instantly. If you push the pedal and there is a massive lag time, this is a sign that there may be a problem with your cable. Over time your throttle cable can stretch, this makes it more vulnerable to breaking.
• Cable damaged - your cable will be lined with a cover, usually rubber or plastic, to protect the braided metal underneath. If you notice that this is damaged or broken, it may have also caused damage to the metal, therefore, replacing the cable is a good idea. The cable may have come in contact with other engine components or a sharp object.
• Cruise control issues - this can be a sign your cable is beginning to fail, as your cruise control can be operated by your accelerator cable. If your cable is faulty, it can cause an issue with your cruise control performance. If you notice any binding or jerking when you are using cruise control this may be a sign there is an issue with your accelerator cable.
• Pedal sticking or pedal hard to push.

Your cable shouldn't just let go randomly, usually, there will be pre-warnings as per the above list. However, like anything over time, your cable will wear and stretch, and a replacement will be needed. Depending on how often the vehicle is used will have a bearing on how long the cable will last, it will vary on each car.
