What does the fuel injector do?
Just like the spray nozzle on your backyard hose, a fuel injector works by atomizing and injecting fuel into the internal combustion engine. Combined with the many inputs from various sensors such as the MAP sensor, the ECU then sends signals to the electronically controlled fuel injectors to operate at the precise point in the combustion cycle.
What are the symptoms of a failing fuel injector?
As with the analogy of the garden hose, if this nozzle gets blocked or restricted the spray pattern will be insufficient to provide the fuel needed for the combustion chamber.
Blocked or failing fuel injectors may display signs such as rough running, hesitation on acceleration, poor fuel economy and just general poor driveability.
One of the first steps in trying to alleviate these issues would be to run a bottle or two of fuel injector cleaner such as Nulon petrol injector cleaner. The detergents and cleaning elements within these products help clean clogged injectors to restore a uniform spray pattern.
If this doesn't work you may have a faulty fuel injector that may need replacement. As these are electronically controlled engine components these suffer from age, heat and use and sometimes require replacement. Fuel injectors also have rubber seals that can occasionally break so this may be another aspect that would require attention.
How much does it cost to replace fuel injectors?
The cost of a single fuel injector can vary considerably and can be anywhere from $100 to $1000+. Naturally it would be more expensive to replace a full set of injectors on a 8 cylinder vehicle as opposed to a 4 cylinder.
The costs also vary greatly between both petrol and diesel engine variants.
