Wategate Actuaters

A turbocharger wastegate is an important control device that regulates the flow of exhaust gas through the turbine wheel. Intially when an engine starts it is fully closed, allowing hot exhaust gas to spin up the turbine wheel. Once going it then helps regulate the flow to stop the turbine wheel overdriving the compressor on the other side of the turbo. An actuator or spring helps control the unit during normal engine operations and is linked to the turbo boost pressure in the intake manifold.

Popular Questions Asked

What is an Internal Wastegate?

The internal wastegate is most commonly used in factory or OE turbo applications. It has a valve built in the exhaust side of the turbo operated by an actuator that is controlled by boost pressure from the compressor side of the turbo. The wategate does just as its name suggests. It dumps unwanted exhaust gas straight down the exhaust pipe. The actuator controlling the valve has a spring which has a preset tension. As pressure increases in the intake the spring is depressed in the actuator, opening the wastegate. This bleeds exhaust gas back down the exhaust pipe bypassing the turbo and slowing the turbine.

What is an External Wastegate?

These are used by aftermarket turbo installations usually on high performance or race engines. The principle is the same as an internal wastegate and they are remotely mounted, not part of the turbocharger. This makes them easy to change (different valve sizes and spring pressures) when tuning a performance turbo engine. It also allows the exhaust to rejoin the pipe away from the turbo or have it vent to the atmosphere.

What happens when a Wastegate Actuator fails?

If the wastegate actuator fails it depends if the wastegate valve is stuck open or closed.

If closed - The turbo will keep spinning faster and faster until something fails as it can't regulate the turbine wheels speed. Hopefully engine management may have kicked in and saved the turbo from a complete failure.

If open - The exhaust pressure to run the turbine wheel decreases and you would lose intake boost pressure. Engine performance would be sluggish.

Can you replace a Wastegate Actuator?

Usually you can. The difficulty is getting to it. You may need to remove the turbo. If it is the valve, then you will definitely need to remove the turbo. If the valve is shot then it is a good idea to fully inspect the turbo as it may be better to replace the whole thing if it is old and showing signs of wear.
