Steering Bushes
Steering bushes are found in the older steering set ups that use a steering box, centre or drag link and an idler arm. The tie rod ends are usually double sided and one end connects to the centre link and the other to the hub or upright to turn the wheels. this set up is found in lots of older vehicles and can be power or non-power assisted.
Idler Arm Bushes - The idler arm arm supports the centre link. The steering box, which is on the right side in Australia and has the steering wheel connected to it. It is bolted to the right hand chassis rail. Under the steering box is the pitman arm. As you turn the steering wheel the pitman arm moves in unison. This is connected to the centre link which moves in unision with the pitman arm. The idler arm bolts to the left hand chassis rail. Its role is to hold up the other end of the centre link.
Steering box Coupling or Rag Joint - The steering box coupling sits on top of the steering box and connects it to the steering column. It is a flexible joint that rotates in unison with the steering wheel and rotates the input shaft of the steering box. It was made flexible so that if there was any misalignment between the steering column and the steering box, the steering column would not bind up. It also helps reduce road vibration from the steering box as it is solidly mounted to the chassis rail.
