Power Steering Pump Seals

Power steering pump seals usually come in a kit and are designed to be used when you overhaul/recondition a power steering pump. These are more for your mechanical workshop or a DIYer with a good tool collection as to strip down and rebuild a pump may take access to specialist tools like a press or certain pullers or circlip tools. Once the seal kit has been put through the pump and the tolerances checked and verified to be in spec, then it should work like a new pump.

The only thing that would destroy a pump is running it for a while with no fluid in it, where the heat generated may cause permanent damage or if contaminated fluid was put in it and damaged the pump. The main cause of failure is the seal although the odd bearing may fail as well. Once apart and properly inspected it will be easy to see if it is worth repairing or not.

Popular Questions Asked

Are seal kits expensive?

They are relatively cheap when comparing them to the cost of a pump. There is a lot more man hours involved when rebuilding compared to buying a new pump. Especially if doing it for the first time. You also need access to a tech manual on the pump as it will have tolerances and torque settings. Every pump is different, so do your homework before starting as it may be easier than you think.

Can the seals be replaced on a power steering pump?

They can. It depends on the pump as to how hard or easy it will be and your access to a really good tool kit. From experience, do your homework and see if you have the tools, access to a manual or youtube clip and of course the seal kit. Then you can decide the best course of action to take.
