Airbag Suspension Load Assist Kits

We have all on occasions added heavy loads to a vehicle that pushes the rear bumper towards the ground like a Mexican low-rider and has your headlights shining up at the trees looking for possums. Whether it is the sheer weight in the back or you have added on a heavy trailer, boat or caravan or a bit of both that is the cause, the end result is the same.

Then you would jump in and drive off. Sure the steering was a bit vague and the brakes and handling required a delicate touch but she'll be right. Well things have changed....

Carrying big loads now requires a degree in mathematics and physics and is taken far more seriously. A product that has been around for years is now becoming very popular in handling heavy loads. Airbag suspension assist kits are now an easy way to overcome the heavy load sag problem.

Popular Questions Asked

What does Airbag Suspension do?

In this case it lifts and levels the rear end of your vehicle and gives you back steering, handling and braking. It is also more comfortable to drive as it works with or compliments your existing suspension. It also helps reduce wear on these components as it takes some of the strain.

Is Airbag Suspension better?

To level the rear of your vehicle when heavily loaded you would need to change the rear springs. If you left these in when not loaded they would make the rear end hard and this makes the handling and ride comfort harsh as the spring doesn't have the load on it to soak up bumps.

The airbag suspension assists the spring when the load is on and lets it work normally when unloaded. You don't have to remove it or add it, it is simply inflated or deflated as required.

Is air suspension legal in Australia?

Yes, it is as we are using the airbag suspension kit to assist load carrying. All the rest of the suspension is still in place and has not changed.

Tips & Tricks

  • Before fitting an air bag load assist kit make sure your springs whether leaf or coil are not sagged, damaged or cracked. If they are, replace them first as you don't want the airbag carrying all the weight.
  • Measure the standard ride height on both sides of the rear of the vehicle and take a note of it. This way you have a data point when loading of where the vehicle normally sits before load is applied and you can adjust the airbag to suit. It may pay to mark that data point on the side of the vehicle
  • The airbag kits are easy to install with basic had tools. Designed to be bolt on, bolt off and are vehicle specific.
  • The airbags are not interconnected and run an individual airline out each side of the vehicle. You could run them to a central point or to your data point on the vehicle sides. Great for adjusting uneven loads.
  • Always fully inflate the airbags before adding the load. Then let the air out to get to your data point.
  • When not loaded, keep air pressure in the bag to keep it inflated and holding its shape. It can be a lot less than when loaded
