Cutting, Grinding and Flap Discs for Metal

Metal cutting, grinding and flap discs are the consumables of the angle grinder world. Without them the tools would be as useless as a drill with no drill bits. They slowly wear down with use and eventually get replaced. You can also use the cutting discs in a circular saw and it works quite well.

If using any of these consumables, use the right safety gear (gloves, glasses/face mask and ear muffs) and make sure there is nothing flammable in the workspace as a shower of hot metal sparks is a great ignition source.

Popular Questions Asked

Why do you need a metal grinding disc?

Grinding disc by name do exactly that. Grind away metal by turning it into little particles while sacrificing part of themselves in the process. Being purely friction, this generates a lot of heat.

Grinding disc can be used to smooth metal like removing burrs from freshly cut steel, cleaning up welds and weld spatter or shaping metal when fabricating. Cleaning up metal before welding is another role they play. They can cut metal, though it is not recommended as the cut will be quite wide and it puts a lot of heat into the metal.

Why do you need a metal cutting disc?

Cutting disc are a lot thinner that a grinding disc. The process is the same as a grinding disc, cutting away metal by turning it into little particles while sacrificing part of themselves in the process. Being purely friction, this generates a lot of heat.

Their main use is cutting metal, which they do very effectively. Take care using them as they will easily cut through just about anything including feet and electrical leads. Do not use them for grinding as they are not as strongly reinforced as a grinding wheel and can shatter. The disc is not designed to take side loads or pressure like a grinding wheel.

Why do you need a metal flap disc?

Metal flap discs are basically a round disc with pieces of sandpaper attached to it. You use it like a grinding wheel though it acts like sandpaper on steroids. Like sandpaper they come in different grits like 40, 80, 120. The lower the number, the coarser the grit and the quicker it will remove metal, rust or old paint. It will also leave deeper scratches in the metal.

Besides grits, they also came in different materials and shapes. It is best to pick a flap disc based on the material you are working on. Eg Aluminium is softer than steel and stainless steel is harder than both of them. Be careful around sharp edges as they can damage the disc.

If you need a consumable for your angle grinder visit Repco in store or online. Just make sure you know the outside diameter of the wheel you need and the inner diameter of the hole so it can fit your machine. If not, just bring an old worn one in with you.
