Contact tips

Connected to the nozzle of your welding gun, a clean and functional contact tip is very important as it is the transferring conductor in the welding process. Using a contact tip that is too big or too small can create problems such as microarcing, overheating, friction, and wire jamming - all of which can lead to wire burnback.

Contact tips do need to be replaced from time to time if you notice any of the below symptoms:

  • Extensive amounts of wire coming out when using your welder.
  • Lots of metal debris, debris is normal when welding however if you notice an excessive about this is a sign the contact tip may need replacing.
  • Wear of the contact tip which can be noticed in a number of ways including wire not coming through, offset placement isn't correct and miss welding joints.

Welding ARC rods

Are to be feed into your welder, the welding rods are also known as the metal filler or electrodes that are used to join two metal surfaces together. Stick welding creates a high temperature ARC which causes the metal to stick, stick welding is a very common way to weld is common in garages and small workshops.

When choosing the right ARC welding rods it is important to factor in that different rods have different strength properties therefore depending on what kind of metal you are welding will depend on what rods you will need.

MIG wire

Welders also commonly use MIG wire when welding, just like welding rods welding wire is also the metal filler. In this process the MIG wire is the electrode that occurs in the welding process. The MIG wire is feed through the welding machine once the welding gun is triggered the wire is pushed through the gun and onto the surface you are welding. Due to the wire being the electrode when the wire hits the surface being welded it triggers the arc therefore creating heat making the wire melt.

MIG welding wires comes in different metals depending on what kind of job your are tackling some of these include:

  • Gasless wire
  • Mild steel wire
  • Flux-cored wire
